Rev genes are a group of viral genes that are involved in the replication and pathogenesis of retroviruses, particularly human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The term "Rev" is derived from "regulator of expression of viral proteins," indicating its crucial role in controlling the synthesis of viral proteins during the viral life cycle.
Rev genes encode a specific protein known as the Rev protein, which plays a pivotal role in transporting viral RNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. This transport is essential for the subsequent translation of viral mRNA into viral proteins. The Rev protein binds to a specific region called the Rev responsive element (RRE) within the RNA, facilitating the export of unspliced or partially spliced viral RNA from the nucleus.
