Randomized response technique refers to a statistical survey method that aims to collect sensitive or confidential information from respondents while maintaining their privacy and reducing social desirability bias. This technique involves the randomization of responses, ensuring individual anonymity and encouraging participants to provide honest answers to potentially sensitive questions.
In this survey methodology, participants are presented with two or more unrelated questions, where one question is of a sensitive nature (i.e., related to a sensitive behavior or belief) and the other(s) are non-sensitive. The respondents are informed that they will answer one of the questions randomly and are not compelled to disclose which question they responded to. This indeterminacy allows participants to maintain their privacy while the data collected provides a collective estimation of the prevalence or frequency of the sensitive topic in the target population.
The random element is introduced using different techniques, such as the use of randomization devices or tables, or by asking respondents to flip a coin. By doing so, respondents are unable to directly identify the sensitive response associated with an individual. This feature reduces the fear of repercussion or judgment and enables respondents to feel more comfortable sharing potentially sensitive information.
