Peristalsis is a term used in physiology to describe the rhythmic contractions of smooth muscles that propel substances through various tubular structures in the body. Derived from the Greek words peri (around) and stalsis (contraction), peristalsis refers to the wavelike movements observed along the walls of organs such as the gastrointestinal tract, ureters, and urethra.
