The musculus extensor hallucis brevis, also known as the short extensor muscle of the big toe, is a small skeletal muscle located in the lower leg. It is found within the deep posterior compartment of the leg, along with several other muscles responsible for foot and ankle movements.
This muscle is generally short and wide, originating from the top surface of the calcaneus bone, which is the heel bone of the foot. From its origin, the musculus extensor hallucis brevis attaches to the base of the proximal phalanx of the big toe, one of the bones in the toe.
As its name suggests, the primary function of this muscle is to extend or straighten the big toe. It accomplishes this by contracting and pulling on the tendons that connect it to the proximal phalanx. This action allows for actions such as pushing off the ground when walking or running, aiding in balance, and assisting in the propulsive phases of gait.
The musculus extensor hallucis brevis is innervated by the deep peroneal nerve, which provides the necessary nerve impulses for the muscle to contract and perform its function. It is important to note that this muscle should not be confused with the similarly named musculus extensor hallucis longus, which is located nearby and performs similar actions but in a different manner.
