Maus Elberfeld virus, also known as ME virus, is a strain of the Hantavirus that belongs to the Bunyaviridae family. This particular virus predominantly affects rodents, specifically mice, and is linked to causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in humans. It was first isolated and identified in the city of Elberfeld in Germany.
The Maus Elberfeld virus is transmitted to humans through exposure to infected rodents or their excretions, mainly through inhalation of aerosolized urine, feces, or saliva. The virus can also be acquired through direct contact with infected animals or their secretions, as well as by consuming food contaminated with infected rodent droppings. Therefore, individuals who live or work in areas with a high rodent population or who handle rodents as part of their occupation, such as farmers or laboratory workers, are at greater risk of contracting the virus.
The symptoms of Maus Elberfeld virus infection can vary from mild to severe and typically include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, abdominal pain, and renal dysfunction. In severe cases, it can lead to acute kidney injury, hemorrhagic manifestations, and in some instances, death.
Prevention of Maus Elberfeld virus infection primarily involves minimizing exposure to rodents and their habitats, implementing effective rodent control measures, and maintaining proper hygiene practices such as handwashing, especially after handling rodents or their waste.
