Marcus Junius Brutus was a Roman statesman and military general during the late Roman Republic. He was born in 85 BCE into a respected patrician family in Rome, and his mother was the niece of Cato the Younger, a prominent politician. Brutus became famous for his role in the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE.
As a young man, Brutus supported the republican cause and held deeply ingrained republican values. He joined the conspiracy against Caesar, driven by his belief that Rome should be a republic rather than an empire. On the Ides of March, 44 BCE, Brutus, along with other senators, assassinated Caesar in the Senate House.
Brutus' involvement in Caesar's assassination made him both celebrated and condemned. Many hailed him as a defender of republican ideals and a hero, while others viewed him as a traitor and the embodiment of treachery. After the assassination, Brutus sought to rally support for the republic, leading armies against Caesar's loyalists and forming alliances. However, despite his military skills and noble intentions, Brutus was eventually defeated by Caesar's adopted heir, Octavian (later known as Augustus), at the Battle of Philippi. Following his defeat, Brutus committed suicide by falling on his own sword in 42 BCE.
