Etymology of LONG ISLAND
The term "Long Island" traces its origins to the early Dutch colonial period in North America. The Dutch explorer Adriaen Block is credited with being the first European to visit the area in 1614, and he named the land "Lange Eylandt" in Dutch, meaning "Long Island". The name refers to the elongated shape of the island, approximately 118 miles (190 kilometers) in length and around 12-23 miles (19-37 kilometers) in width. The English later anglicized the name to "Long Island", and it has been used ever since.
