Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21 in an individual's cells. This extra genetic material alters the development of the body and brain, resulting in varying degrees of physical and intellectual disabilities.
Common characteristics of Down syndrome include distinct facial features such as upward slanting eyes, a small nose, and a flat facial profile. Individuals with Down syndrome often have low muscle tone, resulting in decreased strength and delayed motor milestones. They may also have certain health conditions, such as congenital heart defects, respiratory issues, and hearing problems.
Intellectual disability is a hallmark feature of Down syndrome, and affected individuals typically exhibit mild to moderate cognitive impairment. Their language and speech development may be delayed as well. However, with early intervention and appropriate educational support, many individuals with Down syndrome are capable of acquiring functional skills and leading fulfilling lives.
The condition is usually diagnosed during pregnancy or shortly after birth through a chromosomal analysis known as karyotype testing. However, physical findings and developmental milestones may also suggest the presence of Down syndrome. Additionally, genetic testing such as non-invasive prenatal screening can be performed to detect the risk of Down syndrome during pregnancy.
Although Down syndrome cannot be cured, medical management and therapies are available to address the associated health conditions and developmental delays. Early intervention services encompassing specialized education, therapy, and social support can greatly enhance an individual's quality of life and prospects for independent living.

Etymology of DOWNS SYNDROME
The term "Down Syndrome", also known as "Down's Syndrome", is derived from the name of the English physician, John Langdon Down. He was one of the first to describe the characteristics of the condition in 1866. Initially, he referred to it as "Mongolian idiocy" due to some resemblance he observed between individuals with the condition and people of Mongolian ethnicity. However, this name is no longer considered appropriate or used.
Later on, the condition was commonly referred to as "Down's Syndrome" in honor of Dr. John Langdon Down. However, over time, the possessive form was dropped, and it is now generally known as "Down Syndrome" to avoid indicating ownership of the individuals with this condition.
