The Australian Turtledove (Streptopelia roseogrisea), also known as the Pink-headed Dove, is a species of bird belonging to the family Columbidae. Native to Australia, it can be found across the eastern and northern parts of the continent, inhabiting various types of open woodland, savannas, and grasslands.
The Australian Turtledove typically measures between 28 and 31 centimeters in length, with a wingspan ranging from 47 to 52 centimeters. It is characterized by its overall pale gray coloration, which becomes lighter on the underparts. It owes its name to the distinctive pinkish-gray head, while the lower belly and undertail feathers showcase a pinkish tinge. The wings exhibit reddish-brown hues, and the tail feathers are gray with a broad white band near the tip.
These doves are primarily herbivorous, feeding on various seeds, grains, and fruits found in their habitat. They are often observed foraging on the ground, and their diet may also include insects and small invertebrates.
During mating season, the Australian Turtledove engages in displays to attract a mate, such as bowing and cooing. They form monogamous pairs, and both parents contribute to building a flimsy nest made of twigs and grass. The female usually lays one or two white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for about two weeks. After hatching, the chicks are nourished with a special secretion called "pigeon's milk" produced by the parents.
